The Castle was originally built in the 14th century as a stronghold for the Mazovian princes and gradually became a royal residence, especially during the reign of Zygmunt II Augustus in the 16th century. At that time, it took on a compact, three-winged form combining Gothic and Renaissance elements. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Castle was expanded in Baroque and Classical styles, giving it a monumental look and impressive interiors.

The Castle has witnessed many key events in Polish history, including the sessions of the Great Sejm and the adoption of the May 3rd Constitution.

During World War II, it was destroyed in 1944. Reconstruction began in the 1970s with support from Poles in Poland and abroad, and since 1984, the Castle has served as a museum and a venue for official state ceremonies.

The Castle features a monumental five-winged layout surrounding an inner courtyard, with Baroque-Classical facades and distinctive towers, including the Clock Tower and the Władysław Tower. Its historically restored interiors include the Grand Apartment, the Marble Room, and the Throne Room.
