Celejowska -The House of Bartłomiej Celej

This illustration depicts the Celej House -a gem of Renaissance town architecture in Poland. Built before 1635 for the wealthy merchant Bartłomiej Celej, the building combines local construction traditions with Italian and Netherlandish influences.
Its most striking feature is the monumental attic, considered one of the most beautiful in the country. It consists of three ornate crests with arched niches that house reliefs of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and Saints Bartholomew and John the Baptist. Mythical creatures, griffins, and stone masks add to the rich sculptural decoration.
After suffering extensive damage, the building was restored in the 1920s under the direction of Jan Koszczyc-Witkiewicz, becoming a symbol of Kazimierz’s revival and enduring spirit.
