Main Building of the National Museum in Krakow

This illustration shows front façade of the Main Building of the National Museum in Krakow -a monumental structure built between 1934 and 1989. It is one of the most important examples of 20th-century Polish modernism.

The idea for the museum was first developed by Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz (before the end of World War I). Construction officially began in 1934, following designs by Juliusz Dumnicki, Bolesław Szmidt, Janusz Juraszyński, Edward Kreisler, and Czesław Boratyński. The outbreak of war and the post-war reality delayed its completion until the late 1980s.

The building, inspired by classical traditions, features a reinforced concrete structure, sandstone-clad facades, and a monumental entrance on the south side. Its solid, modernist form is balanced by vertical divisions on the facade, giving it a harmonious and timeless appearance.

Today, the Main Building houses two key permanent galleries of the museum -the Applied Arts Gallery and the 20th–21st Century Polish Art Gallery -and remains a symbol of contemporary Polish museum art as well as an architectural icon of Krakow.
