Former Universal Department Store “Okrąglak”, Poznań

This illustration shows the former Universal Department Store “Okrąglak” -one of the most iconic examples of post-war modernist architecture in Poland. The building was constructed between 1948 and 1954, designed by the renowned architect Marek Leykam, also known for the famous “Żyletkowiec” -building in Warsaw.

“Okrąglak” was the first building in Poznań to be made with prefabricated elements and at the same time a bold manifesto of modern architecture. Its cylindrical, nine-storey form with a flat roof and skylight has no single dominant façade -instead, it relies on the harmony of rhythmic window divisions and distinctive “blade-like” elements. Inside, the building features a striking central staircase illuminated by a circular skylight.

Between 2011 and 2012, the building underwent a major renovation, restoring its original design and details. Today, “Okrąglak” stands as one of the most important monuments of Polish modernism and a true icon of Poznań.
