The Old Town Hall in Wrocław, East Elevation

This illustration depicts the eastern façade of Wrocław’s Old Town Hall, the most representative face of one of the most important historic buildings in Silesia. For centuries, this side of the building formed the heart of city life, while its cellars have housed the legendary Piwnica Świdnicka (1273), considered one of the oldest dining establishments in Europe.

The façade visible today is the result of many phases of construction and reconstruction. The Late Gothic east elevation rises from the foundations of a 13^th century consistorium, now completely absorbed into the later structure. Built of brick and sandstone, the façade combines monumental form with rich, expressive detailing.

The lower part features rectangular windows secured with iron grilles and a projecting chapel bay that deliberately disrupts the symmetry of the composition. Above it, you can see characteristic pointed-arch windows with tracery, followed by three gables. The central one, once polychromed, retains original ceramic ornaments, while its pinnacles were reconstructed during later restorations. The stepped side gables are decorated with ceramics and rectangular blind panels.

The eastern entrance, accessed by a small platform, leads directly into the historic seat of the city authorities. Above the portal sits a Gothic tympanum depicting a lion, an eagle, and St. John the Evangelist, the historic symbols of Wrocław.
