This illustration depicts the Mezonetowiec building at 9-12 Kołłątaja Street in Wrocław, one of the first residential buildings in Poland featuring duplex apartments. This outstanding example of post-war modernism, exceptional even by European standards, was constructed between 1958 and 1960.

Designed by a team of architects: Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrylak, Edmund Frąckiewicz, Igor and Maria Tawryczewska – the building seamlessly combines the functionality of multi-family housing with the comfort and independence of maisonette-style apartments (from French maisonette, “small house”). The seven-story structure contains 56 duplex apartments of approximately 70 m² each, organized into two distinct levels: a living area with a living room, kitchen, and bathroom on the lower floor, and a night area with two bedrooms and another bathroom above. Each apartment includes two balconies – a larger one adjoining the living room and a smaller one connected to the upper bedroom. The top, seventh floor features single-level apartments with rooftop terraces. The ground floor accommodates glass-fronted service premises, accessible from an elevated walkway.

Mezonetowiec stands out for its modernist form, with a clearly defined modular layout and distinctive glazed stairwells leading to access galleries. The architects drew inspiration from the ideas of Le Corbusier, the famous pioneer of modern urbanism and housing design, combining elegant simplicity with practical, human-centered architecture.
