Kamienica przy Rynku Wielkim 5a, Zamość

This illustration presents a townhouse in Zamość – a building with a fascinating history and unique architectural character. Although its current form was built relatively recently, between 1955 and 1957 to a design by Czesław Gawdzik, the location has much deeper roots. The original structure on this plot dates back to the late 16th century and was the residence of Wojciech Wnuk, the first mayor (wójt) of Zamość. In the mid-17th century, Gaspar Achterloni commissioned a representative townhouse with a tall attic, a two-arched arcade, and a pilaster-adorned façade – typical of Renaissance bourgeois homes. The building was demolished in the 19th century. It wasn’t until the 1950s that the plot was redeveloped. The new project followed the architectural language of neighbouring buildings, despite lacking full documentation of the original. When a historic survey with detailed drawings of the façade was discovered in 2006, the missing attic was reconstructed – the most recent attic restoration in Zamość to date.

Why is this illustration worth having?

  • 20th-century urban Renaissance – the artwork captures a unique blend of post-war design and historic styling, faithfully reflecting the character of Zamość’s architecture.
  • Reconstructed memory – although the building is newer, it carries the story of the city’s past and its people – a symbol of continuity in the urban landscape.
  • Details from the past – the illustration highlights features like the arcade and attic, which lend the façade elegance and depth.
  • Zamość in a nutshell – a perfect piece for lovers of architecture, history, and atmospheric city illustrations.
