The Przybyła Brothers’ Townhouses in Kazimierz Dolny

(The House of St. Nicholas & The House of St. Christopher)
This illustration captures one of the most iconic and visually striking examples of Polish bourgeois architecture — the twin façades of the Przybyła brothers’ townhouses in Kazimierz Dolny. A masterpiece of Lublin Mannerism, these richly adorned buildings reflect a style that reached exceptional refinement and complexity in this region.
Built between 1615 and 1617 by brothers Mikołaj and Krzysztof Przybyła — wealthy merchants, brewers, and owners of mills and river trade — the houses were more than residences or shops. They were bold declarations of prosperity, faith, and ambition.
Though nearly symmetrical, the façades differ in meaningful details.
On the left: The House of St. Nicholas, owned by Mikołaj Przybyła, features a carved image of its patron saint, alongside lions, griffins, and Latin inscriptions.
On the right: The House of St. Christopher, belonging to Krzysztof Przybyła, is adorned with an impressive sculpture of St. Christopher carrying the Christ Child — a symbol of protection for travelers and merchants.
Both buildings are crowned with stunning attic parapets, intricately carved like lacework, hiding coats of arms, fantastical masks, floral motifs, and grotesques. Together, they form a sculptural spectacle unlike anything seen in towns of similar size.

Why is this illustration worth having?

A Renaissance masterpiece – The Przybyła Brothers’ Townhouses are among the most elaborate secular buildings of their time in Poland.
Symbolism in every detail – Each figure, mask, or carving carries meaning — from religious allegory to expressions of status, virtue, and wealth.
A true keepsake – Perfect for admirers of Renaissance design, Kazimierz Dolny, and timeless craftsmanship.
