Description

The House of Krzysztof Przybyła in Kazimierz Dolny

This artwork depicts the façade of Krzysztof Przybyła’s Renaissance townhouse in Kazimierz Dolny. Located by the market square, next to the twin house of Mikołaj, it is an excellent example of the rich bourgeois architecture from the early 17th century.
The house was constructed in 1615 at the initiative of Krzysztof Przybyła – a prosperous merchant and brewer. Its richly decorated façade was crafted by the workshop of Jan Wolff, an artist renowned for his masterful fusion of sacred motifs with secular symbolism.
The façade features bas-reliefs of St. Christopher (the owner’s patron saint), St. Francis, and allegories of virtues such as Justice, Temperance, Prudence, and Courage. Ornamental friezes and attics adorned with floral motifs and fantastical masks not only embellish the building but, according to period symbolism, were believed to “ward off evil spirits”.
Interestingly, the house was once vividly coloured! Its original façade was adorned with polychrome painting, known today primarily through graphic reconstructions and conservation research.
