This illustration presents the façade of one of the finest examples of late Baroque sacred architecture in the Lublin region – the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Serniki. Built between 1758 and 1766 to a design by Jakub Fontana, the distinguished architect of the royal court in Warsaw, it is a perfect example of a centralised church layout in the form of an elongated Greek cross. The illustration carefully reproduces the church’s front elevation, accentuated by the rhythm of pilasters and a massive tympanum. The tower, originally lower, was heightened in 1909 and gained its distinctive lantern-topped spire. The late Baroque body, with its monumental dome and classicising details, combines refined geometry with lightness of form.
