Description

St. Adalbert’s Church, Kraków

This illustration depicts St. Adalbert’s Church, located on Kraków’s Main Market Square, one of the city’s oldest and most valuable examples of sacred architecture. Its origins date back to around the year 1000, making it one of the oldest churches in Kraków. According to tradition, the church stands on the site where St. Adalbert (St. Wojciech) preached during his missionary journey to Prussia.

The first structure on this spot was built of wood, followed by a stone church erected in the 11th century. The Romanesque walls preserved to this day date from the 12th century and form the oldest surviving part of the building. In the 18th century, the church received its present Baroque appearance, while still retaining traces of its Romanesque origins in the lower sections of the walls. The interior features paintings by Andrzej Radwański, while the main altar is adorned with 17th-century artworks and statues of St. Adalbert and St. Stanislaus.

St. Adalbert’s Church has preserved not only its unique architectural character, but also its symbolic meaning, as a witness to the earliest history of Kraków, and the beginnings of Christianity in Poland.

Today, together with the Cloth Hall and St. Mary’s Basilica, it forms an integral part of the Main Market Square skyline. The church’s underground area hosts an archaeological exhibition showcasing the earliest layers of the square and a reconstruction of the original wooden chapel.
