Co-cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

This illustration presents the front façade of the Co-cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gdańsk, commonly known as St. Mary’s Basilica -one of the largest brick churches in the world and a magnificent symbol of Gdańsk’s Main Town.

The church was built in stages over a span of 159 years, between 1343 and 1502. Its monumental form was shaped by the leading master builders of the era, including Heinrich Ungeradin, Claus Steffen, Hans Brandt, and Heinrich Haetzel. Despite being severely damaged in 1945, the basilica was meticulously restored, preserving its powerful and austere character.

The building is a masterpiece of Brick Gothic architecture, defined by its monumental scale and strong verticality. The most striking feature of the façade is the massive, nearly 80-metre-high tower topped with distinctive pinnacles, which dominates the Gdańsk skyline. The façade impresses through the rhythm of its slender windows and the precision of its brickwork detailing.

This minimalist composition highlights the monumental proportions of the tower and the rhythmic beauty of its Gothic forms, capturing the timeless presence of the “Crown of Gdańsk.”
