Description
Działyński Palace in Poznań
A classic architectural illustration depicting the façade of the Działyński Palace in Poznań, an outstanding example of urban Classical residences in Poland. The palace was constructed between 1773 and 1776 according to a design by Szymon Bogumił Zug, one of the leading architects of Polish Classicism, and commissioned by the Działyński family, distinguished patrons of culture and public life.
The building is characterized by a representative, symmetrical façade with clear proportions and a rich decorative programme. The central projection topped with a triangular tympanum, sculptural panels, and a balustrade emphasizes the ceremonial character of the palace. The building is crowned with a decorative bird sculpture of uncertain identification, often interpreted as a pelican, which for over two centuries has remained an intriguing architectural mystery of Poznań’s Old Market Square.
The subdued monochrome palette and the aged-paper effect evoke the aesthetics of historic architectural engravings, giving the artwork a timeless, collectible character.
