**Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in summo, west elevation, Poznań**

This illustration shows the west elevation of the Gothic Church of St. Mary in summo on Ostrów Tumski in Poznań -one of the oldest and most valuable churches in Poland. The building was erected between 1431 and 1447 on the foundations of Mieszko I’s former palace and the chapel founded by his wife, Dobrawa. It is here that the symbolic beginnings of Polish Christianity are rooted.

The drawing presents a brick façade with a distinctly Gothic character -pointed arch recesses, slender pilaster strips, and a rhythm of narrow windows that give the church its verticality and harmony. A simple entrance portal made of glazed brick highlights the austere elegance of the façade. Above it rises a small ridge turret, adding a sense of lightness to the composition.

According to legend, a stone with distinctive cuts in the base of the wall was once used by warriors to sharpen their swords -a detail that lends the façade an extra layer of symbolic meaning.
