The church took its present Gothic form, between the 13th and 15th centuries. Its distinctive asymmetrical façade with two unequal towers is one of the most recognizable architectural compositions in Central Europe. The taller tower, crowned with an ornate Gothic spire and a gilded crown, historically functioned as a city watchtower and continues to be the site of the St. Mary’s trumpet call. The lower tower is covered with a Renaissance dome.

The building represents mature Brick Gothic architecture, characterized by strong vertical lines, pointed arch windows and a monumental three-aisle basilica structure. Inside, the church houses one of the most outstanding masterpieces of late Gothic European sculpture: the High Altar created by Veit Stoss.
