This illustration shows the west and south elevations of one of the most valuable Gothic monuments in Poznań -the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in summo, located on Ostrów Tumski. Built between 1431 and 1447, it is a fine example of mature brick Gothic architecture from Greater Poland. The Gothic church was erected on the site of Mieszko I’s former palatium and the chapel founded by his wife, Dobrawa. Archaeological research confirmed that the church stands above fragments of the ducal residence and the first pre-Romanesque chapel -the earliest Christian place of worship on Polish soil.

The west façade, crowned with a stepped gable, reflects the monumental simplicity of medieval architecture. The rhythm of pointed arches and austere brickwork create an image of harmony and balance, typical of brick Gothic style.

The south side, seen from the courtyard of the former canonry, captivates with its clarity of form. Tall, pointed windows give it a vertical character, while the subtle brick divisions add order and structure to the wall’s surface.
