St. Nicholas Church, west façade, Brzeg

This illustration shows the west façade of the Gothic St. Nicholas Church in Brzeg -one of the most fascinating churches in Silesia. The construction of the new church began in 1370 with the participation of master Gunther from Wrocław, financed by wealthy townspeople and ducal support.

The three-aisled basilica, built of brick with 13th/14th-century details, stands out with its monumental towers, numerous chapels, and the distinctive division of the façade into bays marked by buttresses. The main nave, reaching 29 meters in height, is covered with a star vault whose innovative layout gives the interior an airy and slender character. The church façade impresses with its simplicity and harmony of proportions, while the tracery windows and portal reflect the typical “reductive” style of Silesian Gothic. Over the centuries, the church underwent many changes and renovations -modernized in the 17th and 19th centuries, damaged during World War II, and thoroughly restored between 1959–1966, regaining its former glory.
