Description
Gdańska Townhouse in Kazimierz Dolny
This artwork depicts the façade of the Gdańska Townhouse, located on the main square in Kazimierz Dolny. Though more modest and less known, this townhouse embodies quiet elegance and dignity -prioritizing function over ornamentation. The building was constructed in 1795, as confirmed by the date inscribed above the second floor. Although it was built during the Third Partition of Poland, when Kazimierz Dolny was also losing its economic significance, the townhouse retained a sense of refined urban elegance, blending beautifully into the historic town square.
The name “Gdańska” is no coincidence -it refers to the town’s historical role as a vital trading link between Lesser Poland and Gdańsk. Once bustling with commerce, granaries, and mills, Kazimierz Dolny was even referred to as a “little Gdańsk.”
The building’s arcaded ground floor, with its soft semicircular arches, once served a semi-commercial purpose. The simple, classical attic with symmetrical divisions recalls humbler examples of late Baroque design but still maintains a clear urban character. There are no sculptures or elaborate ornaments on the façade -instead, it captivates with its harmonious proportions and the calm rhythm of its windows.
In the 1930s, the building became home and studio to painter and poet Jan Wacław Karmański. He was one of the first artists to recognize and celebrate the unique charm of Kazimierz Dolny. Today, a commemorative plaque bearing his name can be seen above the arcade.
Why is this illustration worth having?
- A different view of Kazimierz -not just Renaissance gables, but quieter architectural witnesses of a changing town. Gdańska Townhouse is a portrait of architectural melancholy -beautiful in its simplicity.
- A record of changing eras -this building marks a time when Kazimierz lost its power but not its dignity. It stands resilient, woven into the urban fabric, connecting history, art, and memory.
- For architecture and art enthusiast -the façade captures the proportions, rhythm, and restrained detail of provincial late Baroque architecture -rare, but deeply Polish.
