Description
Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Adalbert in Gniezno
This illustration captures the majestic silhouette of the Primate Basilica in Gniezno: the cradle of Polish statehood and Gothic architecture. Situated on the historic Lech Hill, this monumental cathedral is the true beating heart of Polish history.
The temple owes its current Gothic form to a major reconstruction carried out between 1342 and 1390, initiated by Archbishop Jarosław Bogoria Skotnicki. Following the destruction wrought by the Teutonic Knights, it was he who decided to erect a formidable basilica on the site of ancient shrines dating back to the times of Mieszko I and Bolesław the Brave.
The front facade is dominated by two massive towers, added in the 15th century and topped with distinctive Baroque cupolas. Nestled right in their shadow are the famous Romanesque Gniezno Doors.
Over the centuries, the cathedral was modified numerous times, including a classicist redesign by the prominent architect Efraim Szreger. Following the devastation of World War II, the building underwent an extensive Gothic restoration, successfully bringing back its austere, medieval majesty.
This minimalist artwork focuses on the perfect proportions and the vertical emphasis of the front facade, bringing out the monumental beauty of a temple that has proudly towered over Poland’s first capital for over a thousand years, bearing the honourable title of a Historic Monument.
