Zamość City Hall
This illustration presents the majestic front facade of the Zamość City Hall: a Renaissance pearl and the symbol of the “Padua of the North.” Featuring its signature fan-shaped stairs and a soaring tower, the building holds pride of place on the Great Market Square.
The story behind this extraordinary structure is a fascinating tale of multiple prominent architects. The original 1591 design was created by Bernardo Morando, the chief visionary and builder of Zamość. In 1605, M. Belter added the characteristic massive buttresses to the tower. However, the building acquired its iconic Mannerist shape between 1636 and 1651, when Jan Jaroszewicz and Jan Wolff raised the main body, expanded the arcades, and significantly elevated the tower. The monumental fan-shaped stairs were later added between 1767 and 1770, based on a design by J. de Kawe and J. Maucher. The perfectly restored facade seen in this artwork is also the result of 20th-century reconstructions led by T. Zaremba, J. Juszczyk, and T. Makarski. They restored the building to its pure historical splendor by removing, among other things, a later guardhouse that disrupted its flawless proportions.
Architecturally, the front facade is a true masterpiece. Its divisions are highlighted by strongly profiled cornices, while the rectangular upper windows are framed by rich decorations. The structure is crowned by a magnificent attic adorned with a row of triangular pediments and vases.
The focal point of the building is its impressive 52-meter tower, which transitions from a square base into a two-story octagon surrounded by a gallery and topped with a graceful cupola. Meanwhile, the monumental, double-flight fan stairs rest on five arcades, the central one bearing a preserved 17th-century cartouche with the coat of arms of Tomasz Zamoyski.
This artwork perfectly captures the flawless symmetry, the almost sculptural detail, and the unique character of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
