“Młotek” (Hammer) Tower, 8 Smolna Str., Warsaw

This poster shows the “Młotek” Tower at 8 Smolna Str. in Warsaw, one of the most recognizable examples of post-war modernism. The building was designed in 1964 by Jan Bogusławski and Bohdan Gniewiewski, and construction was completed in 1976.

It was built on the site of the Ophthalmology Institute from 1870 (destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944) and was originally intended to serve as a hotel for the Polish diaspora. During construction, the concept changed, and it was ultimately built as an exclusive residential block for foreign currency buyers, containing 140 high-standard apartments. The tower featured modern amenities for its time, including fast elevators and intercom systems. A two-story entertainment venue with a terrace was located on the roof. First was a café called “Akropol,” later the “Top Floor” club.

The building is distinguished by its modernist and brutalist shape, which earned it the popular nickname “Hammer.” Its silhouette remains one of the defining symbols of central Warsaw and the Vistula escarpment.
