Centennial Hall in Wrocław

This artwork illustrates Centennial Hall in Wrocław, a groundbreaking feat of engineering and one of the most significant works of 20^thcentury world architecture, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2006.

Built between 1911 and 1913 to the design of Max Berg, the hall was, at the time of its completion, the largest reinforced-concrete structure in the world. Its dome, 65 meters in diameter, surpasses that of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, and is nearly twice the size of the Pantheon’s dome. The interior rises 42 meters high and can accommodate up to 10,000 people.

Centennial Hall is distinguished by its monumental form, four-leaf-clover floor plan, and a ribbed dome crowned with a lantern. Berg employed pioneering construction techniques, from the system of arches and ribs to the lightweight dome structure and intentionally exposed, unplastered concrete surfaces. Large, glazed sections give the massive form an unexpected lightness, unparalleled in architecture of its time.

Together with the Four Domes Pavilion and Poelzig’s pergola, the hall forms a cohesive exhibition complex that has hosted major historical, cultural, and sporting events for over a century.
