Description
Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), Main Market Square in Kraków
This artwork illustrates the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) on Kraków’s Main Market Square, one of the city’s most important landmarks and a lasting symbol of its commercial heritage.
The building originated in the 13th century as a market hall, and in the 14th century, under King Casimir the Great (Kazimierz III Wielki), it was rebuilt in brick as two parallel rows of merchants’ stalls connected by a long-vaulted passage. At the time, it was one of the most significant trading hubs in Central Europe.
After a major fire in 1555, the Cloth Hall was redesigned in the Renaissance style, gaining an elegant upper floor and its distinctive attic crowned with mascarons, created by Santi Gucci.
Between 1875 and 1879, at the initiative of Jan Matejko, the building underwent a thorough Neo-Renaissance renovation led by Tadeusz Pryliński. This campaign introduced the graceful arcades, new projections, and the profiled attic that defines the Cloth Hall’s appearance today.
For centuries, the Cloth Hall remained the commercial heart of Kraków and a witness to the city’s most important historical events.
Today, the upper floor houses the National Museum, while beneath the shopping hall, in the basement of the Market Square preserves archaeological remnants of medieval Kraków.
