Description

Żelazowa Wola Manor / The Birthplace of Fryderyk Chopin

This illustration captures the classicist silhouette of the manor house in Żelazowa Wola, the birthplace of the brilliant composer and pianist Fryderyk Chopin (1810-1849).

Originally, the building served as an outbuilding on the Skarbek family estate. While the main manor and the right outbuilding have been lost to time, the left outbuilding survived. It was right here, at the turn of the 19th century, that the artist’s parents lived and worked: Justyna née Krzyżanowska and Nicolas Chopin, who had arrived from France.

The manor owes its current look to preservation efforts started in 1928, when the building was purchased to be turned into a museum. The reconstruction of the outbuilding and its interior redesign were carried out based on a project by architect Lech Niemojewski.

This single-story, brick, rectangular structure features a seven-axis front facade, a high shingle-clad half-hip roof, and a charming front porch with two robust columns and a semi-circular panel in the tympanum. The manor blends beautifully into the unique, geometrically asymmetrical park along the Utrata River, designed by Professor Franciszek Krzywda-Polkowski.

This minimalist artwork focuses on the perfect symmetry and elegance of the front facade, bringing out the beauty of traditional Polish architecture and the historical spirit of this extraordinary place.
